The Manoir D’Youville, a story of altruism

In 2022, the Manoir D’Youville hotel was promoted to “Hotel Establishment of the Year” for 2021-2022 by the Association Hôtellerie du Québec. Behind this recognition are more than 250 years of history, development, growth, beautification and a common thread: altruism.

The Mill

1765

Marguerite d’Youville and the Grey Nuns
Altruism is inseparable from the history of the Manoir D’Youville and from the woman who started it all, a Catholic nun, founder of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, known as the Grey Nuns: Marguerite d’Youville.

In 1765, after having cared with other women for the sick and invalids of the Montreal General Hospital, which she took care of, she acquired the lordship of Châteauguay

to provide resources for her community. There, on the shores of Lake Saint-Louis, she mobilized to have the resources to take care of others, to welcome women and children in distress, the elderly and the disabled.

Demolition, construction, expansion, improvement, each nun who succeeded each other after Marguerite d’Youville’s death never ceased to develop this exceptional site on the banks of the river. However, it was not until 1946 that the Sanatorium wing opened, but it was the restorations of 1963 that transformed the space into a 120-room rest and retreat pavilion. This large house was officially named Manoir D’Youville in 1978.

2009

From manor house to hotel
The contemporary turning point began in 2009 when the City of Châteauguay acquired the manor from the Grey Nuns in order to share this heritage with the population of Châteauguay. From 2010 to 2013, the management of the Manoir D’Youville’s operations was entrusted to Heritage Saint-Bernard, which transformed the former convent of the Grey Nuns into a hotel.

2013

From hotels to social hotel
In 2013, the management of the manor and its development were entrusted to the Compagnom Foundation. The association is a no-brainer! The tranquility of this exceptional place and the values drawn from history make the manor a favourite site for this foundation with an unconventional economic model, which finances its preventive mental health projects with its commercial activities.

2017

A new direction to begin the metamorphosi
In 2017, Jean-Martin Côté was hired as General Manager. The experience and vision of this seasoned professional with more than 20 years in the hotel industry will change everything. He won the title of General Manager of the Year in 2022 for the Montérégie region.

2018

In 2018, the Manoir D’Youville began a rejuvenation treatment against the backdrop of the very essence of the place, a duty of remembrance that inspires. Since then, the metamorphosis into an exceptional resort site is not only physical! Authenticity, sharing and overall health, both physical and mental, will guide the evolution and diversification of an offer that is increasing in quality. The positioning of the manor house as a social hotel, a model that does not exist elsewhere, is taking shape and asserting itself.

2022

Projects follow one another

Giving back, sharing… In 2022, the manor is making a difference by partnering with the Centre intégré de santé et de services sociaux de la Montérégie-Ouest as part of a program to integrate a dozen young people with autism spectrum and intellectual disabilities into the labour market!

One project doesn’t wait for the other! At the same time, as a nod to history, the team is resurrecting the Grey Nuns’ garden, whose vegetables are cooked at the Manor’s restaurant and at the bistro La Traite.

Here, from the restaurant to the hotel, to the activities, the partnerships and the workforce, everything has meaning and scope! In 2022, the Manoir D’Youville hotel became the hotel of the year in Quebec and was awarded an award by the Greater Roussillon Chamber of Commerce in the Hospitality category. Restaurants, recreational, art and culture. The greatest achievement is undoubtedly that of having given altruism its rightful place.

The Manoir D’Youville continues its development in the direction of the event offer. In 2023, he will have been part of the festivities surrounding the 350th anniversary of the City of Châteauguay by organizing the winter carnival and its pleiad of activities, including the fireworks!
