The History of the Youville Manor
Rooted on Île Saint-Bernard, Manoir D’Youville bears witness to a rich history where heritage, nature, and solidarity intersect.
From the origins to the mission of the Grey Nuns
For more than two centuries, the island has been shaped by the Grey Nuns of Montreal, heirs to Madame D’Youville. Faithful to her vision of kindness and service to the community, they have made the Manor a place of welcome, retreat, and renewal. The current building, constructed in the 1960s, still embodies this spirit of openness and sharing today.
The transition to community ownership
In 2011, the City of Châteauguay acquired the Manoir from the Grey Nuns in order to preserve this collective heritage and make it even more accessible to the public. Management was initially entrusted to Héritage Saint-Bernard, the organization also responsible for the Marguerite-D’Youville wildlife refuge and the Fernand-Seguin ecological center.
The arrival of the Compagnom Foundation
In the fall of 2012, the City invited the Compagnom Foundation to take over the management and development of the site, a collaboration that was formalized in 2013. Under the leadership of its president, Serge Choinière, the Foundation integrated its social mission into the heart of the Manor: to offer respite stays to people living with mental health issues and their caregivers.
Today: the Manoir D’Youville Hotel
Today, the Manoir has become the Manoir D’Youville Hotel, managed by the Compagnom Foundation under the direction of Jean-Martin Côté. It has been transformed into a unique model of social hospitality in Quebec, combining hospitality, inclusion, and community engagement. Each stay contributes to a collective project: bringing to life a place where history, nature, and solidarity come together to build a sustainable and deeply human future.
